Education & Outreach

Chelen Johnson Breck School
Minneapolis, MN

January 2012

Ms. Johnson brought 4 students with her to present their posters at the AAS. She has also rejoined NITARP as a mentor teacher this year, and has just started with her new team. Please see the AAS 2012 page for a summary of activities. She writes:

Of all the professional development programs in which I have been involved, NITARP continues to rank among the top few. The opportunity to work with a world-class astronomer and alongside teachers and students across the country on a real research project is amazing! Watching the project evolve from a seed of an idea in January into a two professional posters presented at the AAS the following January is fulfilling and satisfying. To think that eighteen people can work together over twelve months and thousands of miles is a true reflection of what authentic research is all about.
She has been asked, with her students, to present at her school's Board of Trustees meeting.

NEW 25 JAN: Ms. Johnson has been selected as a SOFIA Airborne Ambassador! Way to go! (and NITARP stuff appears in this local tv segment!!)

July 2011

Ms. Johnson brought 2 people with her to her team's Pasadena visit in July 2011. Please see the Summer 2011 visits page for photos and quotes.

January 2011

Ms. Johnson presented the results of her 2010 team's work at the Seattle AAS in January 2011, and is also again starting up with a team for 2011 as a mentor teacher. Please see the AAS 2011 page for a summary of this team's activities.

Here is the team's science poster, education poster 1, and education poster 2. Ms. Johnson was the first author on the science poster.

Ms. Johnson enjoyed watching her students successfuly present their work, learn how to network with other astronomers, and actually follow science presentations by others. She writes:

Wednesday was poster day for the Breck group. Standing by the poster nearly all day, my three girls described our search for young stellar objects in the CG4 region of the southern sky. To say that I was proud would be a gross understatement. Talking with Dr. Rob Gutermuth and Dr. J. Serena Kim, our collaborators, my students accurately talked about re-discovering six YSOs and discovering 19 other YSO candidates. Whew. I am still tired thinking about this.

June 2010

Ms. Johnson visited IPAC with her team in June 2010. See the Summer 2010 visits page.

January 2010

A team of several students plus Ms. Johnson presented a poster at the January AAS based on work that they conceived and carried out on their own, inspired by their work with the Lynds team last year. (See photo below; the poster is available here.) These students will continue to work on this project and anticipate submitting an article to the RBSE journal as well. As a result of some contacts they made at the AAS meeting, they are also writing up their AAS experience for a journalist or two.

Ms. Johnson has joined a new NITARP team as a mentor teacher. This team has just started up, and she is excited about getting new students involved in this program.

February-May 2009

This spring, eight sophomore girls have joined Team Spitzer at Breck. Once they become more comfortable with the software and vocabulary of the project, they will embark on their studies. At this point, we're not quite sure in which direction their ideas will lead but hopefully we will know more in the near future.
