Education & Outreach

Anthony R. Maranto Phillips Exeter Academy
Exeter, NH 03833
9th-12th Grade

September 2007

Mr. Maranto has switched schools and relocated from New Hampshire to Maryland. He will be teaching an elective in astronomy in the winter term and hopes to start getting students interested in using Spitzer data. He has also been informally asked by someone in the Westmister Astronomical Society to give a talk on Spitzer to the general public on one of their outreach nights.

February 2005:

Mr. Maranto offered a workshop entitled "The Spitzer Space Telescope and IC2118" to the astronomy club to generate interest in working with our data. The talk was to be followed by an evening of general telescopic observation. Mr. John Blackwell and his group took a photograph of the nebula with a 90 minute exposure on an 8 inch reflector with an f3 aperture.

March 2005:

On March 22, Mr. Maranto presented a workshop at the New Hampshire Science Teachers' Association's Elementary, Middle/Junior High, and High School Conference.

The title of his program was: "The Dirtiest, Smelliest, Coldest, and Farthest Places in the Universe, the Spitzer Space Telescope and Classroom Activities for Learning About Infrared Light."

Following a PowerPoint presentation covering the characteristics of infrared, the usefulness of infrared in astronomy, the instrumentation on Spitzer, and some Spitzer discoveries, they did a series of hands-on activities that were inspired by the Active Astronomy kit.

April 2005:

On April 13, Mr. Maranto was the Guest Instructor at a workshop for teachers at the Christa McAuliffe planetarium in Concord New Hampshire. The workshop, for middle and high school teachers was entitled "Satellites, Probes, and Rovers" and his 1.5 hour presentation plus lunch discussion involved the capabilities of Spitzer, recent findings using Spitzer, and a hands-on workshop on detecting infrared.

On April 8, the school newspaper, the Exonian, ran an article describing Mr. Maranto's involvement with Spitzer. Since that article, several more astronomy students have approached him about coming to Pasedena this summer. In addition, the astronomy club is also interested in working with the Spitzer pictures.
