Education & Outreach

Dwight Taylor South Anchorage High School
Anchorage, Alaska

September 2010

Mr. Taylor sends along this update on his and his students' asteroid discoveries.

July-September 2006

Mr. Taylor has used parts of the Infrared Astronomy kit available through the ASP in his classroom in their study of the electromagnetic spectrum.

In August, Mr. Taylor attended the Space Physics workshop sponsored by the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He was able to give a 1 hour powerpoint presentation on his team's research and the capabilities of the Spitzer Space Telescope to the workshop. There were 30 teachers in attendance.

In September, Mr. Taylor attended a Science inservice of the Anchorage School District. He gave a 1 hour power point presentation to a group of 32 secondary science teachers. In addition he gave them a CD of lessons related to infrared astronomy.

Mr Taylor plans to give a presentation about Spitzer at the Math Science conference for Alaska.

April-June 2006

Mr. Taylor is reviewing the guide to Infrared Astronomy and rereading the Galaxies in the Universe textbook. To prepare students with background on the project he had them learn to analyze the spectra of galaxies with active nuclei. They used data from the FIRST survey and Graphical Analysis. Using line value ratios they determined the redshift, velocity, distance, and luminosity. On May 23, 2006 Mr. Taylor presented the project to the science faculty at South Anchorage High School. Eleven teachers were present. He will be sharing the project in July with teachers at a space physics workshop at UAF in Fairbanks Alaska and will be sharing during the science teacher inservice in August for the Anchorage School District.

March 2006:

Mr. Taylor has been reading the Galaxy book by Sparke & Gallagher. He has also prepared two powerpoint presentations for his students, one on our galaxy and the other on galaxies in general. His students are excited by the opportunity to work together on a research project.

Mr. Taylor taught about IR wavelengths using Cool Cosmos and also used the Cool Cosmos website to have his students prepare powerpoint presentations at multiple wavelengths using the site gallery materials. He is teaching about galaxies. They will do the TLRBSE AGN project starting in three weeks. They have just finished learning about Hubble's Law and the expanding universe using the CLEA-Hubble Redshift activity.

January 2006:

Mr. Taylor attended the January 2006 AAS meeting in Washington D.C. He and the Star Formation group planned both the educational and preliminary project plans. He learned about IR wavelengths from activities presented at the meeting and enjoyed talking with astronomers who had poster presentations.

Future Plans

Mr. Taylor is working to set up workshops in his school district and at his state meeting next fall. He is planning to write an article for the state science teacher newsletter and is exploring a credit class/inservice through the local college.

Involvement in the Spitzer project and the enthusiastic response of his students to research has prompted Mr. Taylor to raise funds for professional level software. They are buying six sets of Sky6 Professional and CCDSoft Version 5, ~$3600 worth of software. It will be used in the search for near earth asteroids part of the near earth object observation program.
