Lauren K. Chapple Traverse City East Junior High School
Traverse City, MI 49684
8th Grade

March 2006

Mr. Chapple, Beth Thomas, and Steve Rapp have been making plans for the group's visit to SSC. They are all currently reading and summarizing articles from the from the collection of journal articles from Round 1 to get some insight into infrared spectroscopy and hopefully help us better understand our data. Mr. Chapple has had several meetings with his student who will be visiting the SSC in April. Mr. Chapple is also working in class with about 24 students and with his astronomy camp students, another 13 students, on Spitzer programs.

September 2005

Mr. Chapple has set up a secondary science staff meeting for second semester. It will include a presentation on Spitzer and how it is to be used in the classroom. He is also introducing his Spitzer project and Harlan Devore's as an option for the spring research project. Students must do a stellar spectroscopy project to qualify for either Spitzer or AGN projects.

August 2005

Mr. Chapple has put in for time at his next science department meeting / inservice to present the Spitzer project.

Future Plans

Mr. Chapple is planning an NSTA 2006 Presentation with Ms. Beth Thomas.

He has also applied with the school district to present at the preschool year professional development in-service to our secondary science teachers.

Mr. Chapple also has plans to present the Iron Star project at the SCI-MA-TECH Symposium in May. This is the second year for this 5 county region show which is open this year to Upper Elementary, Middle and High School students.

Lauren Chapple and Beth Thomas are proposing to design and develop a series of activities for each of the teacher projects
