Round 3 Programs - Overview
Round 3 was conducted when this program was still called the Spitzer
Space Telescope Research Program for Teachers and Students. Thirteen
new teachers were added to the Spitzer program for teachers and
students in Round 3. At the January 2008 AAS meeting, the new
teachers met with representatives from NOAO and the Spitzer Science
Center as well as with teachers experienced with the Spitzer program.
They received training in Infrared Astronomy and learned about the
Spitzer Space Telescope, its instruments and the observation planning
process.
For Round 3, three teacher proposals were accepted and submitted
for observations. One team used Spitzer observations to peer
deep inside the dark molecular clouds LDN 981 and LDN 425 to look for
regions of active star formation. Another team used Spitzer to
study the accretion disk of the eclipsing dwarf nova Z Cha. The
third team used both Spitzer and WISE to observe the Seyfert 1.5
NGC 4051 on a daily basis for approximately 10 days for signs of
variability.
The teachers worked with scientists from both the SSC and NOAO, as
well as with teacher mentors with previous experience in the
program. The participating teachers in Round 3 were: Kareen Borders,
Cris DeWolf, Peter Guastella, Chelen H. Johnson, Virginia Jones, Susan
Kelly, Chris Martin, David W. McDonald, Jeff Paradis, Vincent
Pereira, Peter Pitman, John Schaefers, Jen Tetler, and Lynne
Zielinski. Support scientists include: Varoujan Gorjian, Don Hoard,
Steve Howell, and Luisa Rebull. Teacher mentors for these three
teams were Jeff Adkins, Babs Sepulveda, Tim Spuck, and Beth Thomas.
