Where does outer space begin?

Although Earth is part of what we call space, most people refer to outer space as the region of space outside of Earth and its atmosphere. The outermost layer of our atmosphere ends at about a height of 600 miles (960 kilometers) above Earth's surface. This outermost layer is very thin and it is hard to say exactly where it ends, so this is just an estimate.
