Infrared Universe

"Infra" means "below" in Latin, and "red" is the color of the longest wavelength of visible light; the only light in the Electromagnetic Spectrum that human eyes can see. So … the name "infrared" means "below red!"

The science, engineering, and technology of Infrared Astronomy makes it possible for us to detect and study the infrared light emitted from almost everything in the Universe, even though the limits of the human eye mean that infrared light is invisible to us.

Fun Fact

Shooting stars are actually tiny pieces of rock and dust that are burning up in our atmosphere. Many of these particles are left over from the tails of passing comets, so you could say you're seeing a falling comet tail, rather than a falling star.
